Welcome to the... / News / Wet Wakehurst b...
On a day when managing excess rainfall meant trying to keep your umbrella up in the almost gale-force winds, both morning and afternoon sessions were well attended. Following informative talks on how staff reduce, reuse, recycle, and create compost at Wakehurst, it was out into the cold to see first-hand how compost and leaf mulch are made and used to benefit the soil and plants in the beautiful grounds.
With compost units to inspect and a composting area on an almost commercial scale Green Club members were left in no doubt that staff here are committed to reducing the need to buy-in soil conditioners and to recycling waste generated by the cycle of maintenance and gardening in the grounds.
A classroom session gave welcome relief from the appalling weather conditions and interesting insights into compost – through the microscope! With plenty of tea and biscuits to keep spirits up the visit was deemed a success by resilient Green Club members.
