Discover Compost

Here our Green Club members enjoyed an interesting presentation from Bill Griffiths the national recycling manager from Viridor Waste Management on mass composting and home composting followed by a trip around the site. It's not very often that you get to see what happens once your green waste is collected from the kerbside and our members saw directly what happens to seventy percent of the green waste that is collected from the Household Waste Recycling Sites at Westhampnett, Bognor, Midhurst and Littlehampton as well as green bins collected from Chichester DC & Arun DC.

Green Club members were able to discuss with experts why only the following items can be put out in the Green Waste kerbside collections:

• Grass Cuttings

• Weeds

• Leaves

• Hedge Cuttings

• Tree & Shrub Cuttings

• Plants & Flowers

They also learned why some green waste such as kitchen veg peelings is better dealt with by home composting to prevent contamination at the mass compost sites.

The woodhorn group also explained where the compost goes; not only is it bagged and sold in garden centres, it is also used at golf courses, race courses, parks and gardens.
