More great ideas for FOOD saving

Cooking and preparing too much food is one of the main reasons we throw food away – for example cooking too much rice or pasta which it gets left in the saucepan or on the plate.  Not using food in time is another main reason – for example throwing away fruit and vegetables because they’ve gone off in the fruit bowl or in the fridge.  There are lots of reasons for this, for example our plans may change, we forget what food we have in the cupboards or we may forget to freeze or chill something to use at a later date. Did you know that half of us regularly make a shopping list but then half of us don’t stick to it in the shop!

It’s not all about the freezer!
The freezer is a must for food saving but we tend to forget that food can be stored in a variety of ways.

In the fridge. Remember that your fridge should be between 0ºC and 5ºC and leftovers should be cooled as quickly as possible (within 1 or 2 hours).  Aim to eat any leftovers within two days too. Simply by using the food that we already have in the fridge, or by taking last night’s leftovers to work for lunch, we could save between £3 and £5 a day!

In the store cupboard. Remember that food can be bought ready to save. For example dried food like pasta, tinned food and food in jars.

If you are storing food in the freezer here are some more useful tips:

  • Divide large packs of meat into smaller meal-size portions before freezing

  • The same applies to fish

  • Bread rolls can be divided into the right number too

  • Grate hard cheese and freeze ready to use on pasta bakes

  • Freeze whole, soft tomatoes to use straight from the freezer to make tasty sauces

  • Cream – just whip it first
