Green Fingers - Spring 2008

bluebell wood

With three months of topsy-turvy weather behind us and looking forward to more predictable temperatures and longer daylight hours, one of the most frantic seasons for the gardener begins, with lots of sowing, planting and propagating to do. This season’s newsletter is full of handy tips, new ideas and a guide to help you keep up with the season’s essential tasks.

The weather has certainly taken its toll on our beleaguered garden plants and some clearing up is still needed where strong winds may have loosened fences and plants, dead branches have been wrenched from trees and the rain has compacted the soil in borders and the veg patch. Tidying, pruning (see April’s guide) and forking the soil will give an instant lift to tired looking planting beds showing off new growth to its best advantage and lifting our spirits too! Don’t forget to save some time to relax and browse the Green Club website (www.wsgreenclub.com) using the forum to seek advice and chat about all things green with other Green Club members. If growing plants for food is your passion look out for Taste West Sussex events where local produce is celebrated and your imagination will be fired with new ideas of crops to grow.
