Green Diggers Spring 2010

Spring into spring.

Hello Diggers,

It’s spring! It’s time to get out and about in the fresh spring air.  Soon leaves will re-appear on the trees and pretty spring bulbs will appear in the garden.  It’s a great time of year to enjoy the warm sunshine.  When you are in the garden with your friends and family why not see how many different coloured flowers there are or how many birds there are on the bird feeders? When the weather isn’t so good you could make some time to find out about the spring flowers you have seen and don’t forget to get all your friends to join the Green Club with you.

If it’s raining outside your spring newsletter has lots of jokes, a competition to enter and lots of exciting information. Don’t forget your ‘Starting Gardening’ book (which came with your Green Club Welcome Pack) to find out about  what you could grow to eat in the garden this year too.

Happy gardening!

Too much on your plate?

Diggy says have you ever thought about how food is made and all the time and energy it takes to make food?

Think about how much time it takes to grow potatoes or tomatoes, or think about cheese for example.

Competition Time

Diggy would love to see double decker buses full of bananas or potatoes or apples.

Have a go at drawing the buses to show how much we throw away every day in the United Kingdom (see ‘Too much on your plate?’)

Did You Know?

Smell facts to impress your friends!

Diggy says amaze your friends, family and teachers with these smelly facts! Plants produce scents as oils mainly to attract insects to pollinate (Diggy says find out what this means) their flowers.

Growing Gardens

Spring is the time to begin to grow some plants from seed.

Many pretty garden flowers can be grown in this way – they are called half hardy annuals

Quiz

Diggy says can you answer these questions correctly (all the answers are in the newsletter) and how quickly can you do it!

Jokes

Q: What do you call a cat with a spade?

Q: What do you call a girl with a frog on her head?

Riddles

I have no eyes, no legs or ears and I help move the earth.
What am I?

What ends in w but has no end?
